Research about Environmental Contamination by Cytotoxics And Management of Safe Handling Procedures

The primary objective of the MASHA study was to determine the level of cytotoxic drug contamination at workplaces in Europe. Twenty-eight hospitals from 16 European countries participated. Exposure levels were measured in several rounds at defined locations in the preparation area and during administration over a period of approximately two years. Measurable surface contamination of at least one of the substances tested was found in every participating hospital. 75% of the hospitals had more than 30% positive samples. Contamination was found primarily on the floor (58%), armrests (50%), waste bins (42%), and work surfaces (40%). Nearly half of the surfaces not used for the preparation and administration of the medication were contaminated with cytostatic drugs. Overall, the study showed that cleaning measures, particularly during administration, are insufficient to ensure a contamination-free environment. Closer collaboration with medical and nursing associations is necessary to improve safe handling procedures in hospitals and thereby increase the safety of all healthcare workers.
